Network Robustness Revisited

چکیده
The robustness of complex networks was one the first phenomena studied after inception network science. However, many contemporary presentations this theory do not go beyond original papers. Here we revisit topic with aim providing a deep but didactic introduction. We pay attention to some complications in computation giant component sizes that are commonly ignored. Following an intuitive procedure, derive simple formulas capture effect common attack scenarios on arbitrary (configuration model) networks. hope easy introduction will help new researchers discover beautiful area

Robustness versus evolvability: a paradigm revisited.
Evolvability is the property of a biological system to quickly adapt to new requirements. Robustness seems to be the opposite. Nonetheless many biological systems display both properties-a puzzling observation, which has caused many debates over the last decades. A recently published model by Draghi et al. [Nature 463, 353-355 (2010)] elegantly circumvents complications of earlier in silico stu...

This paper examines the dependence of performance measures on network size with a focus on large networks. We develop a framework where it is shown that poor performance can be attributed to dimension–dependent scaling of network energy. Drawing from previous work, we show that such scaling in undirected networks can be attributed to the proximity of network spectrum to unity, or distance to in...
متن کاملNetwork thermodynamics revisited.
Modeling provides a bridge between the natural sciences (physics, chemistry, biology, and the like) and the axiomatic sciences (mathematics and statistics). Inductively-derived descriptive models map observations of physical processes into mathematical descriptions that can be treated as axioms (e.g., the various laws of physics). A synthetic model combines descriptive models of several physica...

Visualizing network data is applicable in domains such as biology, engineering, and social sciences. We report the results of a study comparing the effectiveness of the two primary techniques for showing network data: node-link diagrams and adjacency matrices. Specifically, an evaluation with a large number of online participants revealed statistically significant differences between the two vi...
متن کاملRobustness analysis of network controllability
Structural controllability, which is an interesting property of complex networks, attracts many researchers from various fields. The maximum matching algorithm was recently applied to explore the minimum number of driver nodes, where control signals are injected, for controlling the whole network. Here we study the controllability of directed Erdös–Rényi and scale-free networks under attacks an...
